abstract = "This paper describes the methodology used for monitoring the
tendencies of land cover conversion in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Intensive field campaigns were carried out to verify the new land
use over deforested areas. Technicians of the Forest State
Institute have visited almost 35% of the deforestation polygons to
register the new activities that have been developed in these
areas. Digital photographs and written descriptions were
registered for 650 deforestation polygons. The results showed that
48.4% of the polygons were converted to grass land, 21.2% to
Eucalypti plantations, 12.4% were still under bare soil
conditions, 11.4% were converted to agriculture, and 6.3% were
regenerating natural vegetation. Maps of regional tendency of land
use conversion were produced to guide the statewide decision
                         making.",
